How to play

Draw ten equal squares in a straight line
One row, left to right, all the same size, numbered 1 to 10. Write 'Start' at the left end. Straight matters — a winding track or a circle does not do the same work, because it breaks the link between a bigger number and a longer distance.

Make the die only ones and twos
A proper die goes to six, which is too big a jump for this board. Cover four faces with tape and write 1, 1, 1, 2, 2, 2 — or fold a paper spinner with one half marked 1 and the other 2.

Take turns, moving one square at a time
Each of you picks a token and starts before square 1. Roll, then move that many squares. First to reach 10 wins the race.

Say the numbers of the squares you land on
This is the whole game. Sitting on 3 and rolling a 2, your child says 'four, five' as the token moves. Not 'one, two'. He is naming the squares he passes through, not counting his steps.

Correct that one thing, gently
If he says 'one, two' as he moves, stop and start the move again with him: 'you are on three — so four, five.' In the study this game comes from, the researchers corrected exactly this and nothing else. It is the difference between the game working and the game being a nice way to pass the time.

Play it about twenty times over two weeks
Two or three games at a sitting, fifteen minutes, a few times a week. That is roughly the amount that produced a measurable difference — and it is far less than most parents expect.

Why this particular game, and not Snakes and Ladders
This is one of the very few things a parent can do at home for early maths that has been tested properly rather than merely recommended. In 2008, Ramani and Siegler played this game with preschoolers at Head Start centres in the United States — 124 children, randomly split between this number board and an identical board with colours instead of numbers.
After about one hour of play in total, spread over two weeks, the children who played the number board were better at recognising written numerals, better at saying which of two numbers was bigger, better at counting, and better at placing numbers on a line. When the researchers came back nine weeks later, the difference was still there.
The children who played the colour board improved at nothing. Same board, same adult attention, same fun — so it was not the attention or the playing that did it.
The two details that carry the whole effect
The line has to be straight. On a linear board, the bigger the number, the further the token has travelled, the more moves it took, the more number-names were spoken and the more time went by. All of those grow together, and that is what builds a sense of how big a number is. A circular track — the shape of almost every board game in the house — loses most of that.
Your child names the squares, not the moves. A child on 3 who rolls 2 says “four, five”. The same child saying “one, two” is counting his own footsteps and learning nothing about where 5 sits. This sounds like a small thing. It is actually the entire mechanism, and it is exactly how Snakes and Ladders and Ludo are normally played — which is why those games, enjoyable as they are, do not do this job.
Do not turn it into a lesson
It is a race. He should want to win it, and you should not always let him. If it starts feeling like a test, the game stops working, because a four-year-old who senses he is being assessed stops playing and starts performing.
Keep it short, keep it silly, and stop while he still wants another go.
When he is ready for more
Extend the strip to 20 once 10 is easy. Or keep the ten squares and let the die show 1, 2 and 3. Both keep the same mechanism intact — the straight line, and naming the square he lands on.
