Maths, in the order it should be taught

Most maths trouble is not really about the topic a child is stuck on. It is about something underneath it that never quite set. These plans go in order for that reason — start at the top, even if the problem looks like it is further down.

If your child knows his tables but falls apart on something like 34 × 6, the problem is almost certainly place value rather than multiplication. Begin there — it takes ten minutes to find out, and the times tables plan will work far better afterwards.
