You do not need any of these — every activity on this site works with things you already own. But birthdays happen. When they do, buy the toy that is still useful in three years.

Coloured sticks hide in a wooden board. Roll the colour dice, remember where that colour was, pull it out. It trains memory and matching, and a whole family can play. Play it together and you also see, without asking, whether any two colours keep getting mixed up.

Toymate
Your child picks a picture from the booklet, then stacks and turns see-through coloured tiles in a small frame until the colours and shapes match it exactly. The order of the layers matters, because a tile on top covers the one below. That is looking closely, spatial reasoning and a lot of trying and checking. The 120 challenges go from easy to super hard. We played this with our son for two to three years; the booklet grows with the child.

Toymate
The first step into Colour Track. Your child copies a picture from the booklet by laying see-through coloured tiles in a small frame and turning them until the colours and shapes match. A tile on top covers the one below, so the order matters. It practises looking closely and checking your own work. When the 60 challenges feel easy, move up to the 120-challenge set.

Things a parent uses, not a child plays with. Each one is explained in the article it belongs to.
Not a toy. The dot picture book eye clinics use to check colour vision. Most plates hide a number, so it suits children who read numbers, from about six. Use it in daylight. Some buyers say cheaper prints are faint, so a missed plate means book an eye check, not a result.

No. Every play activity on Learn with Play uses everyday household items. This page is only for parents who are buying a gift anyway and want something that lasts.
We favour open-ended toys — blocks, dough, puzzles, books — that a child can use in new ways for several years, over single-function electronic toys that stop being interesting in a week. Each pick states the developmental skill it supports.
Yes. Product links are affiliate links, so we may earn a small commission if you buy through them, at no extra cost to you. It does not change which toys we list.
Prices shown are indicative only and change often. Always check the current price on the store page before buying.
