How to play
- 1
Collect three things
Send your child to fetch three objects. Do not guide the choice. The stranger the combination, the better the story.

Start the story
Open with 'One day, the spoon woke up and could not find…' and stop mid-sentence. Hand the story over by looking at your child expectantly.

Take turns
One sentence each. Your job is to accept whatever they say and add to it, never to correct it.

Use all three
The only rule of the game: every object must appear before the story ends. This forces the connecting-up that builds real thinking.

End it together
Ask 'and how did it finish?' Let them have the last line. Then tell the story back to another family member at dinner.

Children who hear and tell a lot of stories become children who read well. The link is not mysterious: a story teaches that events connect, that words carry meaning across time, and that language is worth paying attention to.
Play it in your own language
This game works best in whichever language you are most fluent and playful in — Hindi, Marathi, Gujarati, Tamil, Bengali. A parent telling a rich story in their mother tongue does far more for a child’s brain than the same parent telling a stiff, careful story in English. Vocabulary transfers between languages. Awkwardness does not.
Say yes, and
Borrow the rule improv actors use: accept whatever your child offers and add to it. If the sock flies to the moon, the sock flies to the moon. The moment you say “no, socks cannot fly”, the game becomes a test and they stop taking risks with words.
Where to play it
In the auto on the way to school. In a queue at the bank. During a power cut. This game has no materials on purpose — it should be the one you reach for when there is nothing else.
