How to play

Show, then hide
Hold up a die face, or some fingers, for about a second — then cover it. Ask how many. Long enough to see, too short to count.

Start small
One, two and three are recognised on sight by almost every child, and often by two-year-olds. Stay there until it is effortless and enjoyable before going further.

Ask the question that matters
When he gets six, ask: how did you see it? Some children say three and three. Some say five and one. Some counted very fast. There is no correct answer, and asking is what turns instant recognition into thinking about parts.

Move the same number around
Show four in a square, then four in a line, then four scattered. Ask each time. Meeting the same amount in different shapes is how he learns that the arrangement is not the number.

Let him flash them at you
Swap over. He shows, you guess — and you sometimes get it wrong, out loud. Being the one who tests you is more fun than being tested, and he pays closer attention while setting it up.

Use fingers when there is nothing to hand
In an auto, in a queue, waiting for the bus. Flash a hand, cover it, ask. There is no equipment involved in any of this.

What this is actually building
Recognising one, two and three at a glance is something children can do very early — it needs no teaching. What can be built is the next thing: seeing six as three and three, or five as four and one.
That is not a party trick. Seeing a number as made of parts is the same thinking that addition rests on, and later number bonds, and eventually the ability to split 34 into 30 and 4. A child who can see six as two threes has met the idea years before anyone writes 3 + 3 = 6 in front of him.
Being honest about the evidence
This activity is well grounded in theory and it is free, quick and enjoyable. But it is worth being straight: the strong evidence that training this improves later arithmetic is not there in the way it is for, say, The Great Race.
What research does suggest is something slightly different and more interesting: children who spontaneously notice number in everyday life — who mention that there are three crows on the wire without anyone asking — tend to do better at maths years later. The habit of noticing seems to matter more than trained speed.
So play this, by all means. But treat it as building a habit of paying attention to amounts, not as an exercise that will raise a score.
The habit worth copying
Say what you notice, without asking him anything.
“Look — three crows on the wire.” “Two autos, both empty.” “You have got five bangles on that arm.”
No question, no answer expected. You are modelling the noticing, which is the thing that seems to matter. Children pick this up from adults who do it out loud.
Do not make it a speed test
The point is not fast answers. If he wants to count, let him count — and then ask what he saw. A child who feels timed will stop guessing and start dreading, and there is no version of this that is worth that trade at four years old.
